Everyone might be wondering, WHY?
To answer this question, we will bring you to flash back to the history of Bali. There were 3 Hindu Priest came to Bali.
The first, in 8th century ago, there was a group of pilgrims from India, they   travelled to the Eastwards headed by Rsi Markandeya, he was the Surya adorer  with his teachings named Tri Sakti Paksa ( worshipping  to the essence of life). They arrived in this island and made a special ritual to bury 5 types of metals on the slope of mount Agung as the symbol of   Hindu teachings foundation so called “Panca Datu”. That’s symbolizing to the essence of life and to form the people belief about their Divinity. And he named this island as Bali (from Sanskrit word means offering and glorious) From which to obtain the life  purpose we have to make offering and   make this body as an offering.
This temple now known as Besakih temple the Mother temple, dedicated to Maha Wisnu- the Eminence of Love) the Ancestor of all ancestors. The Protector of all creatures.
The second was in 11th century another Hindu Priest came to Bali known as Raja Krta, he also was the Surya adorer. He was the expert of state structure and spirituality. He came to Bali because he had ideology conflict with his wife, and he went to the eastward then he arrived in Bali. He was appointed by the King of Udayana as the Kingdom Advisor. With the new name is Mpu Kuturan. And he was initiated the Concept of existence known as “Tri Hita Karana” literary means “Three elements to obtain the Causer of all causers. This concept event becomes the way of life of all Hindu Balinese. And it used as the foundation every activity, such a religious and traditional purpose, this concept has been using as their basic of guidance.
This concept contains the Harmony relationship between Man to the nature, Man to the others and Man to God.  This doctrine escorts all the Hindu Balinese always remember and conscious about their Creator. The Creator symbolized the Tri Murti (Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva) and also Surya Prajapati (the Lord of all creatures)
The third in 15th century the last Hindu Priest  Danghyang Dwijendra  came from  Java to Bali because there was very large changes in the belief that Islam already influenced  in Java. He came to Bali because he is still love very much with the teachings of Hindu, and he did not want Hindu disappeared on Earth. So he went to the eastwards to Bali. He was convinced that the Hindu in Bali would be a strong belief.

The Uniqueness of Bali

Cremation Ceremony

In Bali this ceremony is known as NGABEN the word derived from ABU means “honor”. So  Ng-ABU-in becomes  Ngaben means to honor. Ngaben is the ceremony to honor the soul of the death to the family temple.

The Balinese believe that a person is consists of the three bodies; the material body (stula sarira), thought and consciousness (antakarana sarira) and the Causer of live (suksma sarira).

The material body of the human being (microcosm) is the same element as the Earth (macrocosm) elements which are consists of five constituent elements known as Panca Maha Bhuta; land, water, fire, air and ether. The cremation ceremony returns the five constituent elements and weakens the attachment of the soul towards worldly desire, the world of thought and consciousness which cling to the soul and causes to be reborn. The death for Hinduism is not considered the last passage of life or the  end of everything, but the soul will take another body to continue the task of life for liberation and bliss. And the soul has to be reunited with the Supreme Being.

Soon after the material body burned, the ashes will be thrown into the sea or into the river. The goal is to break down the bonds of the ego then go through the spirit of eternal life. The Memukur ceremony will be followed after the cremation ceremony. This ceremony asking the God in the form of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva to be sanctified soul of the died to the family temple.
